The Anatomy of a Pocket Diaper

If you’re new to cloth diapering here is a handy guide to the anatomy of a pocket diaper, one of my favorite types of cloth diapers!

Pocket Diapers have two components, the pocket diaper and the insert.

You can stuff pocket diapers with a variety of inserts. Most cloth diapers come with a microfiber insert. Some of the most common inserts are bamboo, hemp and flour sack towels. You can also double up on inserts to increase absorbency for naps, nighttime and heavy-wetters.

Pocket

The pocket is where you stuff the insert into the diaper. Some pockets have a little flap to more securely keep the insert inside. Some diapers have elastic waistbands like the one above, some don’t.

Leg Gussets

The diaper pictured above has one set of leg gussets. These are what keep the poopslosions to a minimum compared to disposable diapers. There are some cloth diapers that come with “double gussets” for added security.

Snaps

Different brands of one-size diapers fit differently. Cloth diaper designs differ from brand to brand and include different rise and hip snap amounts and layout. You adjust the fit of a pocket diaper by connecting the male to female snaps differently. You do not have to only connect rise snaps to rise snaps either. Also, the snaps do not need to be even or reflective from one side to the other.
